Revist: "The Invisible Wounds of War Made Visible"

Lamar Soutter Library hosted Artist in Resident exhibit "The Invisible Wounds of War Made Visible" from June to August 2023.

This exhibit is designed to bring community awareness to the experiences of Service Members from the Home Base Program. Home Base treats Veterans, Service Members and Family Members affected by invisible wounds, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, mild cognitive impairment due to traumatic brain injury, substance abuse disorders and related conditions.

Service Members are asked to create masks based on these questions:

  • Front of mask: What parts of yourself do you feel comfortable sharing with others?
  • Back of mask: What parts of yourself do you not feel comfortable sharing with others?

The masks provide civilians and service members alike a window into these experiences and enhance an empathetic look at the invisible wounds of war. Making these invisible wounds visible allows the viewer to understand more deeply the impact of war on the individual and the continued sacrifices that linger long after a service member returns home.
